Why Are More Europeans Choosing to Live in the Algarve?

Living by the sea, enhancing quality of life, enjoying year-round sunshine… It took no more than that to convince many Europeans to move to Portugal! Freelancers, entrepreneurs, and retirees are increasingly flocking to this Southern European country, particularly to the Algarve, where the gentle way of life, festive atmosphere, and golden beaches are part of everyday life.

Even without tax benefits (removed since 2024), Portugal and the Algarve offer an extraordinary quality of life, with coves, golf courses, and orange blossoms! Discover why living in the Algarve is so delightful today:

Living in the Algarve: Practical Information

Where is the Algarve located?

The Algarve, which corresponds to the district of Faro, is the southernmost region of Portugal. Bordered by the Atlantic Ocean to the west and south, the region extends to the Spanish border in the east. It includes several major tourist cities such as Faro, Lagos, and Albufeira, and a string of authentic small villages nestled along the coast and inland.

How to Get There?

The Algarve is accessible in just a few hours from most major European cities thanks to Faro International Airport, which offers many direct flights to and from several capitals and major cities in Europe. Besides air accessibility, the Algarve is very well-served by a network of modern roads and highways, making car travel within the region and to other parts of Portugal easy and comfortable.

An Exceptional Quality of Life

The Perfect Climate

It’s no secret that one of the major reasons for moving to southern Portugal is its particularly pleasant climate: with over 300 days of sunshine per year, the Algarve is one of the sunniest regions in Europe! But that’s not all; the region enjoys a perfect climate: mild winters and warm but not too hot summers, thanks to the sea breeze that blows along the entire coast!

A climate that allows you to enjoy all the outdoor activities the country has to offer, starting with golf, as the region is known to be one of the best destinations in the world, and surfing, renowned as extraordinary in southern Portugal!

Stunning Landscapes

With over 200 kilometers of coastline, the Algarve offers an incredible variety of beaches, ranging from long stretches of golden sand to small secluded coves surrounded by spectacular rock formations, among the most beautiful (and cleanest!) in Europe. While some are very (too?) touristy, many unknown and quiet beaches still delight locals.

And when you leave the beach and coastal rocks to go inland, you are amazed to discover vast green plains and fields scented with orange, fig, and almond trees stretching as far as the eye can see!

Culture, History, and Sea Gastronomy

Natural landscapes come to mind when talking about the Algarve, but the region also boasts beautiful historical sites, such as medieval castles, churches, and museums that tell the story of Portugal. Walking through Faro’s old quarter, exploring Silves Castle, wandering the streets of Lagos, admiring the houses in Tavira… Each town and village has its own unique charm and architectural treasures to discover!

In addition to its architectural heritage, the Algarve offers a dynamic cultural scene with festivals, concerts, and exhibitions throughout the year. Local traditions, still deeply rooted in the region, along with religious festivals and artisan markets, allow residents and visitors to immerse themselves in Portuguese culture and fully enjoy everything the country has to offer.

Not to mention its incredible gastronomy! Fish and seafood stews, clam cataplanas, fig or almond cakes… Southern cuisine, very different from the north, is a real treat for the taste buds. It’s also the region with the most Michelin stars in the country.

Affordable Cost of Living

Of course, one of the main attractions of Portugal is its relatively low cost of living compared to other European destinations. And even though the south can be more expensive than the rest of the country, most essential goods, services, and leisure activities are often cheaper, sometimes much cheaper than elsewhere!

An Accessible Real Estate Market for All

Although the region is more expensive than other parts of the country, the Algarve offers a very attractive market, especially for foreigners! For many, it’s an opportunity to buy a house by the sea, a villa with a pool, or an apartment with a sea view, in a sunny and easily accessible place, for much less than, for example, the French Riviera!

Investing in Portugal offers excellent opportunities, both for the variety of available properties and the rental potential in this highly coveted region. And who knows, buying a house in Portugal could mean the promise of a retirement in the sun!

Buying a House in Portugal as a Foreigner

If buying abroad scares you, know that the purchasing process in Portugal does not significantly differ from that for Portuguese citizens. If you are European, it’s even simpler: you just need a Portuguese tax number (Número de Identificação Fiscal, NIF) from the Portuguese tax administration. This NIF will allow you to open a bank account, make transactions, and activate public services. Once obtained, the purchase process is the same as elsewhere! If you do not reside in Portugal, you can authorize a representative (lawyer or tax advisor established locally) to manage the process for you.

After that, there’s no need for a visa: as a member of the Schengen area, you can live and work wherever you want in Portugal. If you intend to settle long-term, you must apply for a long-term residence permit from the Portuguese government.

For non-EU residents, a visa application to the government will be necessary to settle in the country. There are different types of visas for different situations; feel free to consult the Portuguese government’s website to find the one that suits your needs.
